It is obvious that, like Moses and Merlin, Gandalf is not a historical figure. The fictional King David fulfils similar status needs and motivational functions as King Arthur and Aragorn. Magic and miracles are just different interpretations and exaggerations of similar improbable events. Will Jesus come again as promised? Will the Jewish Messiah finally come to lead the chosen people to Middle Eastern conquest? Will the newly resurgent Wahhabi-influenced Sunnis of strictly monotheistic and misogynistic Islam financed by oil-rich Arab states finally conquer the oil-rich Aryan Shiites of Iran and then the rest of the world and bring about the end of history? Will KGB-trained Putin, the new wannabe Tsar of Russia, recommence the expansion of Russia until he finally gets the political control of Europe dreamed of by Stalin? Will Merlin reappear as prophesied? Will Arthur, who is only sleeping, come to the aid of the British people when they are in dire trouble? Will the revolution finally irrupt and overthrow evil capitalism to replace it with an egalitarian utopia where no-one is poor and oppressed?

The early signs of a revival of British mythodynamics can be seen in the rapid rise of the United Kingdom Independence Party followed by the radical transformation and unprecedented election victory of the Tory Party in 2019 which attracted supporters away from the other parties, especially Labour voters living away from the bankers’ paradise of London and its supersuburbs. In the 19th century the class war produced by the rapid urbanising industrialisation of the Whig elements of the Tory Party created the Labour Party resistance which culminated in the welfare state of the 1945 Labour government. Unscrupulous individualistic capitalists were then replaced by an army of over-scrupulous conformist bureaucrats. With socialist centralisation of economic and political power and control of education, materialist values based on gender and skin colour were fast replacing traditional Christian ethics.

As in the French Revolution the useful fiction of the Mandate of Heaven of the religious monarchy was attacked as mere superstition and was replaced by totalitarian belief in that other major useful fiction, the Mandate of the People. This was accompanied by a puritanical utilitarian approach to environmental beauty and the replacement of complex spiritual rituals by nationalistic displays of force and mass produced commercial escapist entertainment. The class war became the classroom war. The ‘woke’ educated public servants with their sacred certifications became the arrogant public masters who despised the beliefs and life-styles of the people who paid the taxes that supported their increasingly incompetent rule. Populism, a political movement of discontent with no progressive ideological agenda, has been rising in many parts of the world but it is taking a unique turn in the British Isles.
